I can see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, 12 miles to the south, from my bedroom window. From here it is the Straight Tower of Pisa, because it leans directly away from us. It’s the No 1 tourist attraction in Italy (yes, the Vatican and the Sistine chapel, etc, etc, I know – but everyone in the world has heard of La Torre Pendente). Best visited in winter, when the tourist hoardes are fewer and the magnificent Cathedral and Baptistry (also leaning) can be appreciated all the more. Having been there so many times with house guests, one gets used to helping people with shots of them at an angle, with their hands looking as if they are propping up the tower.

But, finally, I lost patience and decided that it had to come down.

Here’s what happened.

The camera never lies?!

This lady was the exception – she propped up her camera rather than the tower:

I am always impressed how some people will travel so far with their tripods. She lined herself up with the tower and didn’t use her hands: I’m sure she got a great shot…
